"Compassion for animals is intimately associated with goodness of character, and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man.” ― Arthur Schopenhauer, The Basis of Morality
Mission:
The ultimate and unwavering goal of NorthWoods Friesians is produce healthy purebred Friesian and crossbred horses; physically and mentally fit to fulfill the goal of being the exemplary utility horse. My personal goal is to produce KFPS horses with kinship below 18% and under 1% IBC in 5 generations and under 2% IBC in 6 generations.
I strive for robust health, a pleasant disposition, and versatility through intricate, selective means by evaluating all of the resources the KFPS can provide through stallion reports, keuring results, webinars, literature, and videos, as well as through the personal collection of additional information I have obtained over the years. All horses are vaccinated with the 5-way core vaccine (EEE/WEE, Tetanus, Influenza, and Rhino)** as well as additional ones - such as influenza - on an annual basis. All young horses are also given the vaccine for strangles. Our horses are serviced regularly by a trusted farrier to maintain healthy hooves and soundness. All of our horse's teeth are evaluated by a trusted veterinarian or licensed equine dental specialist each year to assess if appropriate dental work is needed.
**If you have purchased a horse from us, please let us know if your location has additional vaccine requirements so we can be sure they have all the vaccinations they need prior to arriving to their new home.
Welfare Policy:
This is a ZERO tolerance policy.
Any and every animal at NorthWoods Friesians - large and small - is treated with the dignity and respect it deserves. At no point would we ever consider putting the animal's life or well-being, physically or mentally, at risk for any sort of personal, professional, reputational, or financial gain. There is absolutely no hitting, kicking, slapping, pinching, stabbing, or poking on any of the animals - especially in sensitive areas such as the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and genitals with intent to do harm, to cause or exacerbate an illness or injury or cause the animal discomfort or intentionally putting that animal or other animal's life in immediate danger and/or risk their well-being. All of our animals are entitled to continuous access to clean water, fresh food, adequate shelter and fresh air and ventilation, veterinary or farrier care as needed, and timely euthanasia to avoid prolonged suffering due to incurable or unrecoverable disease or illness. Any visitor, client, volunteer, or employee of NorthWoods Friesians is expected to show our animals - large and small - the same respect we show our guests. If, at any point, we feel the behavior of an individual(s) violates this policy, the individual(s) will be asked to leave immediately. This violation will also serve as voluntary resignation of employment or volunteering responsibilities.
