Why did I pick the Friesian?
I like different, unique, unusual, uncommon, and ‘against the grain’ so to speak. Arabians, Thoroughbreds, and stock-type horses (Quarter horses, Paints, etc.) exist – cumulatively - in the U.S. in the millions. Approximately 8,000 Friesians are in the U.S. – so they are relatively rare.
“Gate-keepers”
I read several comments that refer to Friesian people as gate-keepers – this is simply not true. Yes, Friesians come with a hefty price tag, even for a young horse. But people need to keep in mind that
58-60 million horses in the world, 45000-50000 of those are Friesians. That is 0.08% of the total horse population. And considering the Friesian horse was almost to lost crossbreeding over 100 years ago, it’s been a very slow gain, especially when battling genetic defects due to close inbreeding. But if you’re interested in getting an adult from the Netherlands, consider the costs of importing horses from the, border crossing fees, vaccinations/veterinary/pre-purchase exam fees, fees from needing to quarantine (food/housing/care), transportation to final location .. you can see this adds up quick.
So why are U.S. bred horses so expensive? Veterinary/microchip fees, cost of traveling/trailering to and from inspections (my circuit location is about 5 hours away!), keuring/runner fees, registration fees, fees associated if your horse earns a predicate. You also have annual membership feeds depending on your level.

Een gedicht voor het Friese Paard
It Frysk Hynder stiet foar freonskip.
Op freonen kin je rekkenje.
Freonen stean altyd foar je klear.
By freonen kin je altyd te plak.
Mei freonen kin je alles diele.
Freonen freegje net, freonen jouwe.
Frysk Hynder, wêr ek op ‘e wrâld;
wy bliuwe foar altyd freonen.
Het Friese Paard staat voor vriendschap.
Op vrienden kun je rekenen.
Vrienden staan altijd voor je klaar.
Bij vrienden ben je altijd welkom.
Met vrienden kun je alles delen.
Vrienden vragen niet, vrienden geven.
Fries Paard, waar ook ter wereld;
wij blijven voor altijd vrienden.
